Definitions:
- Job tip: A suggestion on how to get a job such as how to get an Information Interview, follow up with an online resume submittal, creating a PDF file of your resume, etc.
- Job lead: An actual job position that a company has available.
- Posting: Creating/uploading a job tip or job lead. Sometimes done via email, sometimes via website form.
- Forum (aka listserve): An email sent to a recipient list created via subscribe and unsubscribe. Distribution list is hidden. Usually does not allow reply-to-all and should be human-moderated to prevent spamming and inappropriate content.
- Group. Usually starts out with forum/listserve capability, but adds shared document storage, polls, blogs, and other features. YahooGroups and GoogleGroups are examples.
- Social Community: Sites which promote interactive content and friends/connections and you build your own profile within their structure. Facebook and LinkedIn are examples. Whereas forums are one-directional, social communities support interactive content like whiteboards (Facebook) and walls (Ning). Invitations to join your network are sent directly to associates/friends and are many-to-many, whereas participants in a forum or group are created via subscribing to a central listserve and are one-to-many. The state-of-the art sites allow third-party applications to be added/installed.
- Platform: A Web 2.0 term. A site on the web where you build your own application.
- Website: A site using a domain name (example: www.LongsPeakNet.org)
- LinkedIn. A social networking site for professionals (not just for those seeking jobs). You build your own profile.
- Ning. Both a social networking platform and site that allows quick creation of your own social network.
